film review - what do i think of the pictures?
The opinions expression below are purely my own which have been formed by sitting my ass in the cimena for a couple of hours and writing what i thought
about what i saw and heard during that time. I don't claim to be a sophisticated film critic and i don't watch everything that comes out, or even things
as soon as they are released. But, if you're thinking of catching a film, and you agree what what i've said about films you have seen that i've reviewed,
then you might wanna use my rating as a guide for what to, or what not to watch. I don't give plots away, so you shouldn't get any spoilers reading on
below, but I just try and sum up what i felt about the film overall when i left. I resent people who simply resign themselves to saying that a film is
'crap', so I will try and backup my opinions with references to quality of acting, casting, writing and so forth....enjoy :)

The Ladykillers
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
A little rushed, but how else can you fit such a good book into the 2h30? Bit of fun, but i'd probably have prefered it not knowing the book.
The Day after Tommorow
Great effects, little dodgey on the plot and a lot of holes if you are feeling picky. But entertaining nonetheless.
Troy
Not the Gladiator epic i had hoped for, but Pitt heads an excellent cast that will not be forgotten easily.
The Butterfly Effect
Interesting twist on time-travelling teen horror. Definately worth a look-in, although I fear too few people saw it to make it a good dvd seller.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Something different from Jim Carey, very surreal and keeps you guess. Although Easy to forget once you leave the cinema.
Kill Bill : Volume 2 (April 2004)
After such a good start, could it hold it impress to the conclusion when The Matrix didn't? well...yes and no. It's got some *great* sequences and it's probably as good
as the first, but maybe lacked the spark that would have made it into every DVD collection.
Shaun of the Dead (April 2004)
Hilarious british comedy. The cast of Space and Black Books push this spoof to classic comedy status in its own right, definately worth the time and subtle gags will keep it
funny time and time again.
The Girl Next Door (April 2004)
Elisha Cuthbert, from 24 fame, stars as 'the girl next door' in this american teen romance with a twist. Emile Hirsch's dreams come true when he finds out
that the girl house-sitting for the neighbours is a pornstar. Elisha is....stunningly attractive in this, depressingly so. But she is convincing and the
plot (if not a little far-fetch in it's resolution) is original and keeps you staring right ahead in your seat. This film will definately put her on the map
if she wasn't rooted firmly enough already. Okay, so it's another american teen flick - but hey!....we all love them deep down. A must see for all guys, if
not girls too.
Welcome to the Jungle (March 2004)
Great film, the more I watched the trailer the more I was sure I needed to go see the film and I wasn't disappointed, anyone who likes the 'Stifler-like'
cocky disposition eminent in Sean William Scott's every roll is sure to be a fan of him in this, teaming up with 'the Rock' in his most credible
performance yet, he's a worthy Vin Diesel substitute. Christopher Walken makes a great bad-guy as ever; and although the plot looses
a bit of the pace it sets at the start, it keeps you watching and guessing til the very end :)
The Passion of the Christ (March 2004)
Great soundtrack, great cinematography, well acted; but overly gruesome and the plot feels flat, however powerful director Mel Gibson tries to
make it powerful. It just felt like 2 hours of a small part of a story that everybody already knows, just told again with more blood on the
big-screen. It might provide a welcome treat to RE lessons for years to come if teachers feel the 18 rating can be over looked.
Religions aspirations aside. To me it's a bad concept achieved well, so production-wise great. But anything that has Jesus as it's main character
is going to have to face a lot of flak, and is kinda tieing itself down on the 'twist at the end of the plot' front.
Starsky and Hutch (March 2004)
Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson team-up for this big-screen spin on the 1975 classic series. It has a distictly 'GTA Vice City' feel about it,
complete with big hair and palm-beach backdrop.
The plot is a traditional police drug bust, but the attention seems to fall more on the 'good cop - bad cop' relationship between the two
title characters, which feels distinctly 'Shang High Noon' but works as the jokes come fast and frequent. The attention to detail was what
had me laughing out laugh loud and the writters were right not to weaken and cash in with any cheap jokes (other than maybe the locker room
scene ;)). Even Will Ferrell's suitably strange cameo as 'Big Earl' felt like a welcome addition to the already lavish cast list.
It was funny, retro, fast-paced and the soundtrack really made it feel authetic. With convincing performance from Snoop Dogg, and guest
appearances from the original two casts members it's sure to be 100 minutes worth sitting through, maybe even buying the dvd in 3 months time :)
